'Tis the Season
Posted By : Nancy Schess

No, not that one.   Baby birds happily floating from the antennae on top of my roof to the long branch of a well rooted tree.   Mama bird showing her babies how to take advantage of the musical bird feeder next door.   The warmth of the sun dancing through the leaves while watching this season’s nests build way up high in the tree.   Dinner on the

Constructive Criticism
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Do you give it?  And if so, how?   Constructive criticism is not always easy to give.    Both of my kids (now very grown) will tell you that when they were young, if I started a sentence with “Can I make an observation . . . “, they knew what was coming.  I suppose for better or worse, but I always thought better. They may not have agreed.   In th

Family Tradition
Posted By : Nancy Schess

We had such a nice Father’s Day weekend.  It started with a “surprise” visit from our son and his fiancé, continued with lots of family time and a super great gift from our daughter (hint – there is a Dad Joke theme in my house).  And of course, lots of good food.  It ended with an annual family gathering we have been enjoying for more years than I

Ice Breakers -- Gotham Style
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Following in the footsteps and by the examples of our stellar Manhattan and LI Dinner groups, as I write my blog this evening, I am getting ready for a fun LI Womens meeting tomorrow.   I am sitting here with an envelope full of questions on little slips of paper ranging from – “If you were an animal, what would you be?” to “What is your least favo

I AI -- Have You?
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Recently, I was trying to organize some thoughts around an upcoming presentation. It was not a conversation about the law, but instead a practical conversation.   I was having trouble getting started but knew once I took the lid off, the content would flow.  I decided to give AI a try.    Someone recently recommended Claude.AI so I downloaded the

Happy Memorial Day!
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Happy Memorial Day everyone! As I write my blog this Monday evening and get ready to post for your Tuesday morning read, I am reflecting on the start of summer.   While technically not official for a few more weeks, my deck is already set up and this weekend we completed the annual trip to Costco to indulge in the parade of the potted flowers.  The

And Battle They Did
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Have you been to Gotham’s Battle of the Bands?  If you didn’t make it this year, you missed quite an afternoon.   With full disclosure, this was the first time I was in attendance but it will absolutely not be the last.  The talent, variety and energy on the stage – and in the audience -- at Groove was incredible.  The place was definitely “groovin

Special From Far Away
Posted By : Nancy Schess

This year, none of my kids was able to make it home for Mother’s Day.  That’s ok.   Don’t get me wrong – I missed them terribly and look forward to each and every time we can be together and hopefully soon. But when they are “grown and flown” that gets harder.   My lesson learned “presence isn’t always the present”.  All of my children (including m

The Flying 2025
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Anyone else feel like this year is going particularly fast?   I was talking with a friend recently about the proportionality challenge of time.  You know what I’m talking about.  At a young age, the passage of one year feels like forever.  Yet later on, not so much.   It’s the proportionality challenge rearing its head.  As we gain experience (my e

A LItte Night Music

Saturday night, Rock Voices (Long Island West) came together for their Spring Concert at Walt Whitman High School.    When Bill joined this chorus last year, he and we really had no idea what to expect.   He knew only that the group was a non-audition necessary chance to sing with others that enjoyed the experience as much as he did.    What he fou

Closing the Deal

I’m curious if you have a story or a tip.    To some degree, most of us have responsibility for bringing in new business.  It is one reason we come to a networking group – to expand our business referral sources (of course, in Gotham along with the strong sense of community inside our family).   I am curious to hear your thoughts and advice for “cl

A Tradition of Frogs
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Some family traditions stick and just remind you of special times.  In my family, one of those traditions is full of frogs.     When my children were in nursery school many, many years ago, they learned a song about frogs. That meant, we all learned a song about frogs – frogs here, frogs there, frogs are jumping everywhere.  Come on, I know there a

And Then They Won

I'm afraid there seems to be a pattern when we go to the ballpark.    My husband is a real Mets fan. So is my son.  It is actually more than a little fun to listen to them watch a game together on the phone hundreds of miles away from each other.  But I digress.   What do you think it means that if/when we leave the ballpark before the end of the g

Chicago
Posted By : Nancy Schess

We spent this past weekend in Chicago.  The Schess clan converged on the city and spent the weekend celebrating all sorts of wonderful things in our world. But, I digress.   I have never spent any time in Chicago, and I am now a fan.  We were in a part of town called South Loop, walking distance to the lake, multiple museums, restaurants, bars and

Bedside Manner
Posted By : Nancy Schess

I am going through a stage right now where several of my regular doctors are retired or retiring.  Most often, they are breaking the pact we made where they promised not to retire until I offered my approval – but let’s move on from there.   The net result is meeting new healthcare providers and the opportunity to compare and vet bedside manner.
