This blog is not so much about the story that I’m relaying. This blog is about trust.     The same woman, Rachel, has been cutting and coloring my hair for the past ten years. On Saturday morning, I had an 9:00 a.m. appointment for a cut and color. The salon called me early in the morning to tell me that Rachel was ill and would not be coming in. The salon’s offer was either I could reschedule my appointment with Rachel  or they had someone else available on saturday mor...

It’s that time of the year again, Gotham invoices are available for payment. And, invariably, this is the time when I hear members asking, “What has Gotham done for me?”  Here’s my answer to that question, this is what Gotham has done for me. As most of you  who read my blog know, I love to travel but I am a very fearful flyer. Bill Solz, Gotham therapist extraordinaire, has generously spent  time talking to me and helping me to understand the genesis of the fear. While I ha...

As today is New Year’s Day, I thought it would be interesting to learn how we developed the tradition of making New Year’s resolutions. Using Google as my research tool, I learned the Babylonians made promises to their deities at the start of each year that they would return borrowed objects and pay their debts. The Romans began each year by making promises to the deity Janus, for whom the month of January is named. In the Medieval era, the knights took the "peacock vow" at t...

One of the most fun aspects of this time of the year, for me,  is all of the treats that are delivered to my office. We’ve gotten Lindt chocolates, baked brownies, and chocolate covered pretzels. While I try to limit my intake, it  is exciting to see what gift will be delivered next.   My husband’s office gets similarly inundated with treats. Last week he brought home a tin of candy cane flavored popcorn. It did not sound appetizing and we all hesitated to try it. Surprisingl...

In an effort to find a favorite blog for the Gotham Gazette I read a few of my older blogs. One of first blogs concerned an attempt to overcome a personal fear. Rereading the blog several years later inspired me to revisit the topic.   As many may know I love to travel. As many of you may not know I am an extremely  fearful flyer. In that blog, I wrote about my fear of flying and wrote about my intent to overcome the fear.  Yet, here I am several years later still a very fear...

I was so saddened by the news last week of the death of David Cassidy. He truly was my first child hood crush.   As a young girl, I remember saving up $8.00 in cash and coins and mailing it all away to be a part of his fan club.  Immediately upon receiving the posters and small heart stickers with his  picture on them, I proceeded to cover my walls.  I’ll never forget how angry my mother was with me when she saw  fifty one inch stickers glued onto my pink wall. But, for David...

Several years ago-after Hurricane Sandy-my husband and I decided to apply for a grant, through N.Y. Rising, to raise our home above flood level.  After several years of applications, submissions of plans, costs etc. and a variance hearing, work is set to begin on our home tomorrow.   During the construction, the bottom level of our home will be obliterated and the top level will be raised over twelve feet in the air. Obviously, as a result, we have to move out of our home dur...

I am hoping that this blog is not read as a political blog. Rather, I hope it’s read as a blog about family.   I was saddened to see pictures, on the internet, of Malia Obama tailgating before a Harvard football game. There were allegations that she was doing much more than tailgating, but, when I realized what I was looking at I quickly clicked off of the website. I remember how difficult freshman year at college was for me, living away from my family for the first time, mak...

Today, I am all about surprises. Yesterday, my husband and I threw our eldest daughter a surprise bridal shower and, even though there were slip-ups, i.e. text messages not meant for her sent in a group family text, I think we pulled it off. She had a fabulous day and she seemed, genuinely, surprised.   For me, planning the party was more fun than I expected. I really enjoyed planning a party for someone else. I loved figuring out what restaurant she would most like to have ...

I cannot believe that Thanksgiving is almost upon us. And for the first time in several years, I am hosting.   While for most people on Thanksgiving the turkey is the “star” of the show, I am all about the side dishes. I love filling my plate with a taste of every side dish and just a smidgen of turkey. Given that I am hosting, my plan is to have an assortment of sides to appease me. :)     So I am reaching out to you Gotham. Other than stuffing (which my husband makes the be...
