Desperately good
Posted By : Corey Bearak

We saw – and very much enjoyed – a musical last night at the New World Stages. Desperate Measures, very loosely (better to say barely) based on Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure, proved a delightful musical. Recommend you see it. Every time I glanced to my right, I saw Shelly smiling. Female lead Lauren Molina seemed to channel Lucille Ball with he

Songs find a way to stick in my head.   Different reasons.   Stuff going on with politics makes me recall two great Manassas songs from their 2nd studio LP, Down the Road, “Isn’t It About Time” and “Lies.” I used one in a tweet earlier this month and kept thinking about the other whenever I used hashtag #Lies on any number of tweets this month.

It's Wonderful

Going into this weekend, I planned no blog relating to music. Indeed, I thought a lot about the theme Gotham’s webmaster covered yesterday. As with much of my writing, things change. Then we attended a concert at the now named Theatre at Westbury which used to have Music Fair in its moniker. My familiarity with the music and that the performers inc

No secret around these parts about my love for live music. Most know I attended a fair amount of concerts over the years. Some years more shows than others. Few disappoint. I generally leave rather satisfied and energized by the music. Something certainly clicked this past Wednesday eve (June 20, 2018) at Jones Beach. Living legend John Fogerty, t

The Sounds of Summer

The wretchedly rainy weather suggests otherwise. Usually the warm weather we usually find – albeit not this year – signals wondrous opportunities to experience live music, often outside. So in addition to looking forward to attending some baseball games, discussions before, between and after my weekly weekend and eve basketball games involves upc

Are you attending Gotham Battle of the Bands®?
Posted By : Corey Bearak

This afternoon, Gotham hosts its annual Battle of the Bands®.   In contrast to discussions about politics that tend towards controversy and division, music tends to bring people of different persuasions together.   Some of my social media posts (I purposely avoid giving P.R. to either platform in this blog) invite “interesting” comments. Even ar

Last night we celebrated 33. And we crossed an item off Shelly’s bucket list. The item: Rod Stewart in concert. Rod the Mod performed tunes from his catalogue including his Dylan cover (in honor of Fred?) Forever Young. The band members played a wide variety of instruments beyond the usual guitars, bass, drums and keys. At times a banjo, sax, mando

Nothing like live

Nothing like live music; especially good live shows.   Already this month, famous for the "Ides of ...."  and how it "weathers," shapes up rather nicely.   On its second day, I enjoyed original Grateful Dead members Bob Weir and Phil Lesh ("Bobby & Phil Duo") at Radio City.   On the "Ides", no assassinaton but rather a celebration of two great

Listening?

My enjoyment of good music remains steadfast. Those who know me best know my preferences (tastes?). Indeed leaving a lunch last month at my alma mater (same place for poli. sci. and law school) the question, what is Poco?, got posed by the distinguished ethics professor and the speaker my friend Sean and I delivered to the Mineola LIRR on our way b

When I seek a respite from work mostly in and around politics (which I enjoy), I turn to sports and music.   I enjoy playing ball, with regular weekend and weeknight full court basketball “games” at my former elementary school gym.   Live music, especially from performers I’ve followed from back in the day who still got it, provides a real shot o

A year end top ten list
Posted By : Corey Bearak

Let me start with best wishes for the new year. I hope I helped a bit to get you ready with last week’s blog highlighting my song list to ring in the new year which also exists in a YouTube playlist. (If you tire of music since two weeks ago I covered my Holiday song playlist and last week I shared concerts I streamed driving to a Chanukah gather

Songs to ring in the new year
Posted By : Corey Bearak

Two weeks back I shared my list Happy Holidays in songs to allow folks to enjoy musical cheer through the holiday season and that includes celebrations that continue today and tomorrow (and thereafter). Ahead of the new year we embrace, I offer an updated “Songs To Ring In The New Year.”   Please enjoy the new year. Ring it in loud and enjoy the p

Last week’s blog “released” a list of holiday-themes tunes for the season we currently enjoy. Not sure everyone seeks to hear those themes but certainly they predominate on radio dials. My ears and sometimes my eyes focused elsewhere when I chose music. I stumbled on a concert film, “Mark Knopfler & Emmylou Harris - Real Live Roadrunning - F

A new leaf?
Posted By : Corey Bearak

Today the City picks up the leaves. That meant I needed to place out the Leaf Bags. 10 of them. Knowing I had floor access (not seats) for Squeeze that eve and basketball to start my day, I started the day earlier to bag the leaves in the yard. I already had three bags out front filled over the two weeks since the first of City collections da

Tempted

Tempted   Out with friends for dinner with more than a few couples before a charity function sponsored by my Knights of Pythias (FDR) Lodge, the ladies evidently were discussing plans ahead and my wife shared our plans for next weekend. Our friend Abby asked how many times Shelly and I attended a Squeeze show. I responded at least four.   That a
