Bedside Manner
Posted By : Nancy Schess

I am going through a stage right now where several of my regular doctors are retired or retiring.  Most often, they are breaking the pact we made where they promised not to retire until I offered my approval – but let’s move on from there.   The net result is meeting new healthcare providers and the opportunity to compare and vet bedside manner.

Being Influenced
Posted By : Rona Gura

I have written several blogs about ads for certain products “magically” appearing on my Facebook or Instagram feed after I spoke about them.  For example, a Van Cleef & Arpels ad had popped up on my Instagram feed after my son and I discussed a necklace he was thinking of purchasing. I questioned, in those blogs, whether my devices were actuall

A new milestone appears within reach. Four decades together for Rachelle and this commentator. Actual date is tomorrow. Sometimes it meant taking in a Broadway show; occasionally a concert. Last year we dined out for brunch with our children. This year, the kids plan gathering here at Grand Junction (as Marisa named this abode on FourSquare years a

Porch Sitting
Posted By : Fred Klein

I admit it, I spend an inordinate amount of time, pre sun up to post sun down, on my Key West front porch observing and engaging with the passers by.   We are situated on an intersection corner and there is multidirectional incoming traffic enhanced by lots of southern hospitality inspired "Good Mornings" which pave the way for easy conversational

Spring
Posted By : Benjamin Geizhals

When I realized that my blog day this week fell on the Spring Equinox, I cast aside my drafted blog to celebrate the arrival of Spring. (My sympathy to those of us who live - permanently or temporarily - in warmer climes where the significance of Spring goes unappreciated.) For me, Spring is the time for growth and, more-importantly, optimism. The

Fashion Faux Pas

A few Sundays ago, I got up and dressed to go out for a run. It doesn’t take much to get ready. My gear is laid out the night before, and truth be told, I could dress with my eyes closed. Or so I thought.  That day, I got about 100 yards away from my door when I realized that my pants were on inside out and backwards. The lighter, mesh fabric that

Exploring a New City
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Rona’s vacation theme started me thinking about how I plan to visit a new city.   Recently, we had a few days in a city we knew some but hadn’t spent any real time exploring.  So, I dug into the internet, researching sites to see, restaurants to explore, maybe even a little shopping.   My daughter, knowing her mother, encouraged me to slow down.  A

Maintaining Vacation Afterglow
Posted By : Rona Gura

Anyone who knows me, knows that I believe that we all need to take vacations. We all work hard. For me, vacations are critical to recharge, our bodies, minds and souls.    My husband and I have recently been discussing how to maintain that sense of calmness we feel after a vacation. We have used the term vacation afterglow and discuss often how to

Shelly and I shared a nice show last night with Marisa.  It's special when you can still share great and meaningful songs by an original artist with your children.  Burton Cummings of The Guess Who sang and played the hits and more in a worthy performance at The Flagstar at Westbury Music Fair. I had not seen him perform in more than a decade -- su

Let's Try

“Being honest may not get you many friends, but it will always get you the right ones.” The best I can tell, this quote is attributed to John Lennon.    The art of being honest with friends can be tricky. Some are blessed with the art of diplomacy and can say pretty much anything, and you'll thank them for it. Most don't say anything, while others

Attitude

I know that everybody has a back story and very few of us have it easy, but if you work in the service industry, service is your most important product! If I come into your establishment to enjoy myself, please do not tarnish my enjoyment with your attitude. If you are busy, that's good for business and should make you feel positive.   If you are t

Orchids

We have three orchid plants. We haven’t seen flowers in years — most likely not since the flowers when we first bought the plants. There is a large plant and two smaller ones. And one is even smaller than the other.Depending on the “tips for orchids” of the moment, we water them, let them dry out, mist them, keep them by the window, keep them in dar

Spring Fever

It seems like this week has been a break out week for the weather. A few back to back days in the 50's. Is this the start of spring or a head fake? With Spring upon us it should be easier for Gotham members to meet in between there regular meeting for there "Triad". For those that are not familiar, a "traid" is a breakfast or a lunch meeting with o

They Sure Do Grow Up
Posted By : Nancy Schess

Sunday night we celebrated the wedding of a close friend's daughter.  Our families have been friends since the bride and my daughter met in kindergarten.  That's a long time.  I literally watched this young woman grow up.   The wedding was filled with families and young adults we have known for that long.  Kids that used to play on my driveway, now
