China continues to enforce some of the world’s strictest internet censorship. Its "Great Firewall" has evolved into a sophisticated digital barrier, using AI and keyword blacklists to block foreign websites and ideas. Even searches like “freedom” have been flagged and restricted.
While many had hoped younger leadership would change the system, the opposite has happened. The goal seems clear...maintain control by limiting access to outside perspectives.
Meanwhile, in the U.S., we have full access to information, but most choose to consume only what confirms their existing beliefs.
Algorithms serve us more of what we already agree with, creating very deep bubbles. We are now a society just as divided, not by censorship, but by choice.
It's ironic, one system blocks information entirely, while the other overwhelms us with so much of it that we self-censor through preference. And as Washington continues to churn and burn, I wonder how much of this media fragmentation helps fuel the divide.
Time will tell.
