The Material Girl Has Jury Duty, Sort of
Posted By : Rona Gura

A recent article about Madonna caught my eye. She appeared at the Supreme Court building in New York City in response to a jury summons she received. She was dismissed, however, within two hours, was not questioned for any case, and spent the wait in a clerk's office instead of in the sprawling juror waiting room. A spokesman for the state court

A True Confession
Posted By : Rona Gura

Mitch’s last blog inspired me to write about this topic: I have a confession to make; I do not like and prefer not to eat meat. My older daughter feels similarly. I am not a vegetarian because I will eat poultry in any form as well as fish. This is not a political decision for me, rather it is simply a matter of taste. I do not normally di

What Type of Person Are You?
Posted By : Rona Gura

With all the unhappy events that are in the news recently, I wanted to take a moment to write a short blog about a fun topic. And, of course, one that’s summer appropriate. So, here’s the question: Ice cream; are you a vanilla, chocolate, or strawberry person? And, of course the follow-up question, soft serve or hard ice cream? I am a v

Is It Nice to Share?
Posted By : Rona Gura

One of the only rules for Gotham bloggers, that I am aware of, is that we are supposed to stay away from “political topics.” Understanding the reasons for it, I absolutely agree with this rule. But I find it so difficult to write today without acknowledging the tragedy of Malaysia Flight 17 and the conflict in Israel. Both incidents have made me pr

Taking Care of Business

While I was contemplating posting the lyrics to "Monday, Monday,"  I thought the following would be more fun.  The first concert I went to was BTO when I was in tenth grade. And while I thought these lyrics were fun then, they mean something entirely different to me thirty-five years later: You get up every morning From your 'larm clock's warning T

WARNING; This Blog May Offend You
Posted By : Rona Gura

A recent article in the Sunday Times made me squirm. Apparently, unbeknownst to me, there is a growing movement on college campuses to provide “trigger warnings” to college students that the materials they are about to read might upset them. Given as examples of works that might, in the future, require warnings were “The Adventures of Huckleberry F

My Gift to Myself
Posted By : Rona Gura

Last Saturday morning almost all of my family was out of the house by 8:00 a.m. Other than myself, the only other person left in the house was my sleeping daughter. I was essentially alone and had the whole house to myself. There was so much I could have gotten accomplished during that time. I could have answered emails, walked on the treadmill, cl

Soccer Fever
Posted By : Rona Gura

Do you have it? We do in our house. Of course, we had soccer fever even before this year’s World Cup, as both my step-daughter and step-son are soccer players. Watching the U.S. play on the world stage has, so far, been incredible. Watching the U.S. finally beat Ghana, as a result of a goal scored by a sub was amazing. Even Google has soccer

I Was Right

My youngest daughter, Sydney, is in Israel this week. She was so excited when she called me a few months ago from school to tell me that she and her friend Jaime had applied together to take a Birthright trip. Sydney was even more excited when she called to tell me that they had both been accepted on a trip. Quickly, however, the excitement t

A Lesson in Sportsmanship
Posted By : Rona Gura

As I have written many times in many many blogs, I am not a sports fan. So, no one was more surprised than me when, I suggested that we change the time we were meeting friends for dinner Saturday night so that we could watch The Belmont Stakes before we left for dinner. I do not think I have ever voluntarily watched a horse race before. But there I

Family

Saturday was my husband’s annual cousin’s club. Every year in June, all of the relatives from my mother-in-law’s side of the family get together at our house. The cousins begin arriving at about 12:30 and each brings their own picnic lunch and beverages. We provide the location, pool, hopefully sunshine, and the bathrooms (a definite necessity).

Memorial Day
Posted By : Rona Gura

Given the meaningful blog Fred wrote on Friday as to the history behind Memorial Day, I’m wondering how most of us spend Memorial Day. For my family, it’s always been about inviting some close friends and family over to, hopefully, enjoy the good weather and our pool. We always order too much food (so I don’t have to cook during the following week

The Sacrifices We Make
Posted By : Rona Gura

It’s that time of year where I play the role of a dutiful wife. I only do for my husband once a year so I should be a bit more easygoing about it. But I cannot even pretend to enjoy it because I dislike it so much. There is nothing about it that I like. It’s dirty, smells awful, and there is nothing about it that interests me. In fact, when

She's Back. . .

Monica Lewinsky’s name is again all over the internet due an essay she has written that is to appear in the new issue of Vanity Fair. In the article she details a very difficult sixteen years in the time since her name became a household word. Most quoted on the internet is the following passage that appears in the essay, "Sure, my boss [Bi
