A Favorite Thanksgiving Memory
Posted By : Rona Gura

My family had an interesting conversation over the Thanksgiving table. We each recounted our favorite childhood Thanksgiving memory. I tried to relay a memory from when my children were young. But my now adult children called me out on that and asked me to recount a Thanksgiving memory from when I was a child.  It was, actually, an easy memory to t

It's All About the Sides
Posted By : Rona Gura

For me, Thanksgiving is all about the side dishes. It’s also about the frame of the turkey but that’s a blog for another day.   We generally host Thanksgiving and serve “traditional” side dishes. For us, that includes sweet potato casserole, with the melted marshmallows, a string bean casserole, with the Durkee fried onions, my husband's stuffing w

A Strong Voice In My Head
Posted By : Rona Gura

Growing up in a Jewish family in the 1960's and 1970's, the Holocaust was an important subject in our home. My father, as he did with most things, had very strong views about the Holocaust. He insisted that, as Jewish people, we must continue to discuss and learn about the Holocaust to honor the millions who died and to ensure that it never happens

Curbing the Emotions
Posted By : Rona Gura

Lately I have been dealing with hiding my personal emotions while in a professional setting. During a recent oral argument I found what the other side was saying so unprofessional, outrageous, and outlandish that I had to battle internally to keep my anger in check.   Hiding emotions in a professional setting can be incredibly challenging, especial

Astrology-Do you Believe
Posted By : Rona Gura

There was a time when I would check my horoscope everyday in the newspaper. Now that I get all of my news exclusively online, I no longer do so.   Astrology has fascinated people for centuries, captivating believers and skeptics alike. While I find the insights entertaining, I won’t comment about its accuracy in predicting the future. But astrology

Ryan Got Married
Posted By : Rona Gura

Last weekend, my son, Ryan, got married. This is my third child that has gotten married. So, one would think that I would be used to the impact of emotions you feel watching a child get married. But I wasn’t.   Watching my son get married felt so surreal, like being in a television show, only I had a starring role as "the emotional tearful mom." Al

The Joy and Chaos of Grandchildren
Posted By : Rona Gura

This past week, I have spent a lot of time with my grandchildren, Jordan age 3 and Taylor, 18 months.   Having grandchildren is like signing up for a circus you didn’t know you were hosting. They show up, turn your house totally upside down, eat one bite of what you offer them and then ask for something else, deciding for some reason that they no l

The Concept of Nothing
Posted By : Rona Gura

I was having trouble thinking of a blog topic this week. Nothing came to mind. Then I started to think about the concept of nothing.   In a world constantly buzzing with information, sometimes the most refreshing thing is. . .  nothing. Nothing doesn’t demand attention or push for productivity. It simply exists, waiting for you to notice its quiet

Updating
Posted By : Rona Gura

I am getting so tired of updating my phone.   It seems as if, everyday, there are more updates for Apps on my phone. If I go a few days without updating my phone, the amount of updates grow exponentially.   While looking at my phone my grown children have reprimanded me for not updating sooner. They also reprimand me f having too many unread emails

My Personal Aversion
Posted By : Rona Gura

Is there a food you have an absolute aversion to?   For me, it’s cooked carrots. I absolutely love raw carrots. I eat raw baby  carrots by the bagful. I often go through a bag weekly.   The moment you put a little heat under a carrot, however, I cannot look at it, let alone eat it.   My husband finds my aversion to cooked carrots humorous. In fact,

Where's the Inventory?
Posted By : Rona Gura

I am frustrated.   I need a dress to wear to the dinner the night before my son’s wedding.  I quickly looked online at some of the department store websites near me. Then I went to the mall to look at and try on the dresses I had seen online.   I was shocked that, when I got to the first department store, I could not find any of the dresses I had s

Where's the Salt?
Posted By : Rona Gura

What has happened to salt?    I know it’s not a healthy preference but I like salt in my food. My husband will laugh at me because he has caught me salting my food before I even tasted it.   I have noticed, however, that most restaurants no longer have salt on the table. You have to ask for it. And, it’s generally taken almost as a criticism of th

Top Secret Information
Posted By : Rona Gura

I dislike making gender specific characteristics. But this one I have to question.   During a conversation at lunch at work last week, the subject of our weights came up. The men were very willing-and in fact did-to share their weights. The women, on the other hand, all refused to disclose their weight. And we were all shocked that the men so readi

Getting Back Into Shape
Posted By : Rona Gura

During the pandemic shut-down I used the time at home to get my body in shape. I awoke everyday at my usual time. Since I did not have to give myself an additional forty-five minutes to drive to work, I used the time to exercise.   For years I have walked on the treadmill approximately three times a week for thirty to forty minutes in the morning.

Setting Boundaries
Posted By : Rona Gura

I had a telephone consultation with a prospective client last week. As I was working from home, I conducted the consultation on my cell phone.   As we were hanging up, I said my usual send-off, “If you have any further questions, feel free to contact me.” At 8:00 am the next morning my cell phone rang from a number that was not in my contacts. Firs
