How old?

How old?
Categories

Got up, got out of bed and dragged a comb across my head. Before going downstairs to have a cup I stopped short in front of the mirror. I was staring in total disbelief and thought "who is this guy?" His beard is "frosted" and he looks much older than I thought. I eventually realized that the image in the mirror was me but I was expecting to see someone a bit younger.

I feel about 39...maybe 42 if I'm tired. If someone asked you how old do you feel, what would you say?

Satchel Paige famously said "How old would you be if you didn't know how old you was?" I would be 42!

There was an interesting article I read not long ago on why middle aged men often date much younger women. It went beyond the typical surface observations and opinions and delved into some good psychology. The study found that as men moved out of their early 30s into late 30s, 40s, and even early 50s that they still perceived themselves as being essentially the same as their early 30s. While they may be a step slower here and there they could still throw a baseball, swing a golf club, run, etc. without a seriously noticeable degradation. As a result they still identified with a much younger self and were happy to tell themselves that they really hadn't changed much so they should still be as attractive to the same dating partners as their younger selves. Eventually age catches up and the realization is that the sands of time have moved a bit but there is a deep psychological rooting to see oneself in a younger vein.

I didn't write the article, didn't do the psychological studies, and don't warrant the conclusions as fact - just found it an interesting read.

First off, while we mere commenters can to a hyperlink, the bloggers can and I urge them to consider same in the future (as I have done during sporadic guest gigs. Below find the video from which the lyrics got lifted to start this thoughtful blog:

On the Jefferson Airplane LP, "Bark," there is this song, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dbshnvztGA&feature=kp.
Substitute "young? for "pretty" and I the sentiment works.

After spending time with my young-minded and active parents in Palm Beach this week, having bourbon tastings, beach walks, and long talks in the golf cart, it is bittersweet to realize that the experiences don't match the numbers. . . .

I am the age that I am - and that ain't so bad considering the alternative. And just keep the Beatles references coming. And in the End...

Age is irrelevant as long as you're having fun.

Just had this conversation with some friends on Friday night! I decided I feel about 35.

Since I don't have to comb my hair I make it a point never to look in the mirror until after my shower. Age is relative , you are not your parents. Appreciate your maturity. That said, give yourself a present; get a facial you will look and feel much better.

Mitch, when it comes to telling your age, take the advise of my wise grandmother, "My dear, once you turn 40, if anyone asks your age, add 10 years to your number...everyone will tell you how wonderful you look for the rest of your life!" She was certainly right. :)

Forget the mirror...try this: "I have achieved my 70 yrs in the usu. way: by sticking strictly to a scheme of life that would kill anybody else. It sounds like an exaggeration but that is really the common rule for attaining old age." Mark Twain. 'Today Mitch, you can add 20 more!
