Rather than having coffee or lunch dates I favor the 5 o'clock drink at the Friars Club.  Not only is the mood "lubricated" by alcohol, but many interesting folks wander into the Lucille Ball Bar to add to the cheer and mix.

Last Thursday I met with two venerable Gotham members at the Friars and was surprised when neither ordered an alcoholic drink. I enjoyed my Patron on the rocks with a lime twist while they imbibed soft drinks. No matter how hard I pushed they refused to have an alcoholic beverage.

I'm not saying that the meeting wasn't a success or that they were more guarded because of their drinking choice, it was just surprising.

While we're on the subject of drinking choice, my favorites are Champagne,  tequila and white wine (Pino Grigio). What's yours?

I generally eschew midweek drink sans wife - besides my car is often closer than Freds to the venue where the imbibing might occur. My current preferred drink, Malibu with lime juice and seltzer. 2nd choice straight or in coffee, Franjelica. 3rd choice and rare of late, Red Label and soda.I can enjoy many wine varieties and prefer various "boutique" ales to beer.

Used to be a good cold glass of a sweet Riesling but I recently upped the sweetness quotient and now favor Moscato. Of course there is always a good apple martini on special occasions.

Some of us don't need it to be "lubricated," I'm juicy enough without it.

Mexican Cocoa-Cola does rock. Got a case in Home Depot of all places. Made with real sugar (no corn syrup) and in glass bottles. Cold, crisp and flavorful vs. the canned garbage bottled here.

In no particular order: Savignon Blanc (summer only), Malbec or Pinot, Goose with soda and a twist or a vodka gimlet (but it's only good about 1/2 of the time, usually when the bartender is 60+).

Summer -- Hendricks with St Germain, Muddled Cucumber Club Soda and a Wedge of Lime; A Great Dry Riesling or a Sparkling White (Champagne, Cava, etc.); A Golden Margarita (Don Julio silver works fine for me in this)

Fall & Winter -- Manhattan (the old way... Rye, Angostura Bitters and a great Sweet Vermouth); An Oregon Pinot or French Burgundy, But I like most reds...; Don Julio Anejo or, on a special occasion a Don Julio 1942!

Wow Fred.....So New York....Cold Heineken in the quintessential green bottle. Bud Light for drinkability. A shot or two or three of iced Patron if I'm trying to expedite things. At home in the kitchen while preparing dinner I'll usually have two fingers of Bulleit Bourbon. This is all predicated on if I had a hard workout. If I haven't worked out that day I don't drink. BTW....A cold Mexican Coke is the absolute BEST. Is there a dress code at The Friar's Club ?

Reds: Bordeaux, Burgundy, Pinot Noir, Malbec (and some whites); Grey Goose/rocks/olives; Maker's Mark/rocks; Patron neat; various beers (imports/craft); etc. -- but not necessarily Fernet Branca!

The turnover date from summer to winter is the Yom Kippur break the fast when my cousins and i all drink scotch.

Also in the words of Dean Martin "If you don't drink, when you wake up in the morning is as good as you will feel all day.
Winter to summer is Memorial Day weekend.

I was always a beer drinker like Ben and Don...but this summer my wife and I experienced an evolution into the wonderful Arnold Palmer cocktail. Vodka (perhaps citron) with 1/2 iced tea and half lemonade. Refreshing and astronomically healthier (especially with diet mixes).
