Coincidence—or Something Else?
Last week was vacation time for us. We spent a really fun week at our family apartment in Florida. The apartment has been in my family since I was a child, and it is part of a lovely beachfront complex: two large buildings that share a pool club by the beach. Picture hundreds of apartments spread across two large buildings.
We spent part of nearly every day relaxing at the pool and meeting new people. We met a fun family from Canada visiting their dad’s apartment and a nice couple who live in the development year-round.
Now here is the coincidence. After some pool time conversation, we discovered that all three of us lived on the same floor in the same building. The family from Canada was even staying in the apartment right next door.
It was one of those small moments that makes the world feel both enormous and wonderfully tiny at the same time. Maybe it was just coincidence—or maybe it was a reminder that everyday life has a funny way of connecting us when we least expect it.

It happens every now and…
It happens every now and then. I had two different childhood friends from where I grew up in Manhattan Beach Brooklyn. I discovered one a few years ago that moved about 30 min from us. The other two towns over. Just found out about that one a year ago.
You grew up in Manhattan…
You grew up in Manhattan Beach??? I grew up in Sheepshead Bay! We were practically neighbors!

I also just took a vacation…
I also just took a vacation and so this post comes at a good time for me look back philosophically (and nostagically!) about vacations.
I think we probably find many "coincidences" the more we engage with others, and we tend to engage more with others on vacation. We're relaxed, enjoying ourselves, not keeping our head down and rushing to work.
Also, there's probably the tendency to talk to others while in a different location in order to find - either/both - "friends" from home so we don't feel out of place OR new friends from "exotic" places so we expand our horizons. The end result is the same - new friends!
