Though a cherished song by Chicago who were not on the bill last night (Saturday, July 25), the title just fit as we enjoyed four bands at the Harry Chapin Lakeside Theatre in Nassau County’s Eisenhower Park.  Weather-wise, it turned into a lovely, cool, dry eve.  Good music, my wife and official concert partner-daughter, a few good friends, dinner we brought in. Fun conversations before the show and between acts.  What could be better?  Mark and Amy arrived first and “secured” our spot. The Diamonds arrived after us.  The crowd seem much larger than any previous show we attended there.

Each band sounded good.  Cathy Richardson who once played Janis (Joplin) on Broadway capably delivered (as she has for almost two decades) vocals once sung by the iconic Grace Slick and Mickey Thomas during earlier iterations of Jefferson Starship, Starship and its originator, Jefferson Airplane.  On a personal level, even though the band covered many later hits most know, I missed some early Airplane and Starship tunes from Dragonfly, Red Octopus and Spitfire.  It’s tough when a band enjoys such a substantial catalogue.

Pure Prairie League satisfied me at the outset, opening with my favorite, “Two Lane Highway” (of course, they close with “Amy”).  

Atlanta Rhythm Section’s brief set channeled memories of the first time I saw them at the Dr. Pepper festival in Central Park.
