Is AI Making Us Smarter or Just Lazier?

I recently asked a group of people I was giving a workshop to (on AI, no less:) whether AI is making us smarter or just helping us avoid thinking. Then, of course, I considered asking AI for the answer.

There is no question that AI is useful. It can help us write faster, research quicker, organize our thoughts, and occasionally make us sound more intelligent than we were five minutes ago. That is both impressive and somewhat scary. But like any technology, it depends on how we use it. A calculator can help you solve math faster, but it does not mean you understand the problem.

Maybe the real question is not whether AI is making us smarter or lazier. Maybe it's whether we are still willing to be human. Think, question, edit, care, and bring our heart into the process.

AI gives us a great starting point. But if we let it do all the heavy lifting, we will end up with faster answers and weaker muscles.

Definitely not for research. Just watched an argument in New York's Appellate Division last week wherein the attorney was questioned about seven different cases he cited in his brief that do not exist. Clearly, he relied on AI to write his brief. Even the attorney on the other side had to answer as to why he didn't point out to the court in his brief that cases in the other side's brief didn't exist. A bitter lesson for both of them.
