Losing Our Snow Days

Losing Our Snow Days

I may be a little late with this blog but I have been thinking about this topic for a while.

On February 12, 2024, one day in advance of a possible major snowstorm, Mayor Adams announced that New York City schools would be virtual the next day. Clearly, he was reacting to the predictions of an oncoming snowstorm.

The storm came and, according to my two daughters who are New York City teachers, school was taught virtually that day.  Mayor Adams’ actions got me to thinking, are kids no longer going to have snow days?

We all remember the anticipation as children waiting to see whether schools will be closed due to snowstorms. And I can clearly remember the excitement when you saw your school district listed as part of the scrolling names at the bottom of the television screen which indicated your school was closed. You knew you had a day to relax and play in the snow.

Is this generation of students, and generations to come, going to lose the fun and excitement of snow days due to our ability to now teach virtually? And should snow days be eliminated?
