One of the best things that my dad passed down to me is a fanatical rooting interest in Baseball, and more specifically, the New York Yankees.
I became a fan at the dawn of my Golden Age of the Yankees, in the 1950s. During the span of Manager Casey Stengel's stewardship, they won 10 American League Pennants and 7 World Series.
In 1954, an off year, there was even a Broadway musical based upon them, "Damn Yankees". Later there was a movie.
With the firing of Casey in 1960 (he argued because he "got old"), the Yankee winning ways continued through 1964.
I must say, I was spoiled by the prosperous rooting interest I enjoyed in my teens into my 20s!
Overall, the Yankees have won 41 Pennants and 27 World Series. This record is unmatched and seemingly unbreakable.
With the above as prelude, I crash down to earth with the current state of my Yankee fandom. Yes, having ridden high makes it worse, but, nonetheless, I am very unhappy!
In a nutshell, the Yankees can not defeat good teams (they are 1-15 in their last 16 games against the 2 teams ahead of them, the Red Sox and Blue Jays). Everyone has a theory, but nobody knows. In the real world, heads would roll if this trend continues through season's end.
Two sore spots for me are Aaron Judge hitting in the low .252 since July and Anthony Volpe falling short of Major League standards both at bat and in the field.
If only my rooting and rituals could change their luck!
Right now they are my Damn Yankees, but, if there is any solice, as Yogi said, "It's not over until it's over!"
