A Gotham Story

A Gotham Story

In discussing Gotham I aways say that “Gotham is special, we care.”  And Gotham proves it to me again and again. On this day when we think about those we lost on September 11, I thought this story would be worth telling.

A few weeks ago I sent out the following email to Fredslist:

The writer of the email below is one of my closest and dearest friends, Melanie. She is family to me.

Her very close friend's 8 year daughter was diagnosed with a  Diffuse Midline Glioma (DMG), a type of cancerous brain tumor. Briana’s DMG is a grade 4, which is the most aggressive type.

She will be receiving 6 weeks of targeted radiation at the New York Proton Center affiliated with Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. The family lives in Florida so they will need housing here. They are on the waiting list for the Ronald McDonald house but have been told that, currently they have no options for them.

Much of the treatment is out of network so their financial resources are limited. If anyone knows of any resources for this family with respect to the housing issue please contact Melanie directly, she is cc'd on this email.

To say that the responses that I received were tremendous is an understatement. I am not going to mention names because there were so many responses and I do not want to slight anyone. Gotham members offered their own living spaces, used their own contacts, and sent my email out to everyone they knew.

Included in the contacts that ultimately received my email was a member of the Board of Directors of Ronald McDonald House. A place in Ronald McDonald house was secured for Brianna and her family. And now Brianna can receive the treatment she needs without the worry or concern of housing or food for her and her family.

So, the next time someone asks you why Gotham is special, please share this story. I know I will.   And to those of you who are remembering lost loved ones today you are in my thoughts and prayers.
