Our December Parents
Posted By : Donald Bernstein

I especially think about my parents in December.  They both have December birthdays -- my mother the 17th, and my father the 21st.  Eve's parents by chance were also December babies -- her father the 15th, and her mother the 22nd.  Of the four of them, only Eve's 96 year old father, Rupert, is still with us. We had a splendid little family birthday

Halloween

We are getting the grandchildren for Halloween this year. They are staying the weekend. Beth, who will be three in December, is going to be a ballerina. Little Noah, who will turn one tomorrow, will wear a cute little pumpkin costume.   It has been a long, long time since I have gone trick or treating with little ones. When my children were youngi

Lunch Vacation

Here we are on Goat Island in Newport.  It sounds more exotic than it is -- there is nothing on Goat Island.  Not even goats.  But being on vactaion, Eve said I can eat anything I want.  And that counts for a lot, including Ben and Jerry's.   Usually lunch during vactions means taking time to stuff calories in your face in between what you are doin

Jefferson

I was not sure this morning if I wanted to write about my beach umbrella, or Thomas Jefferson. As it is July 4th weekend, let's go with Jefferson.   I have never been a huge Jefferson fan.  It started when I went to Benjamin Franklin Junior High. The town's othe junior high school, and our rival, was Thomas Jefferson. So being anti-Jefferson was in

This was a weekend of old family traditions, snowed out traditions, and new ones.  We spent it in the Berkshires.  There were about twenty of us, young and old.  It has been a number of years since the extended group (almost) all assembled in Lenox.   One of our traditions is touch football on the golfcourse just a few yards from the house.  This y

Our vacation

We are on Martha's Vineyard for few days and today seems to be our second day of rain.   Our first day and a half were sunny and included a trip on the Menemsha bike ferry and then a lovely ride on roads with sights of the sound and beautiful beaches and dunes.  For lunch we stopped at Larson's Fish Market and sat outside on the dock on our beach c

My Drink With Fred
Posted By : Donald Bernstein

Coming this week is my holiday drink with Fred.  We do it every year in December.   We have to meet at 5 pm, I am told, even though it is a bit on  the early side.   I am not sure if Joanne expects him to be home at a certain time, or if he just needs to get to bed early.   Either way it is fine with me and I show up at the appointed hour.   We tal

Who by Fire and Who by Water.....

One of the most solemn prayers we say on Yom Kippur is U'netaneh Tokef, written centuries ago.  It is in many ways the highlight of the long service.   Before we got to that during the service yesterday the synogogue's president congratulated everyone for having been inscribed in the book of life last year, which carried some sadness to it as not e
