Traditions
This past week, my family gathered to celebrate the Jewish New Year. This is a time that we reconnect with traditions that have been passed down for generations but also a chance to create new ones. There is something especially meaningful about sharing familiar foods, stories, and rituals with the people closest to you. Even the smallest traditions can carry a sense of comfort and continuity.
In my family, the traditions always start with food. This year, we had the staples but very much also varied the theme. The past few years we have been celebrating with my son in southern Virginia which is a very different experience than we are used to. Meeting new people who bring their own traditions to yours is actually kind of special.
What stood out most for me was the balance between honoring the past and making room for something new. As families grow and change, traditions can grow with them, whether that means adding a new recipe, figuring out how to bring a tradition to a new location or simply creating more time to be together. It was a warm reminder that traditions are not only about our past, but also about the memories we are building now.
