Verities
Verities
There are certain verities (truths) that one should adhere to as we lead our lives.
Not necessarily in the order of importance, some are:
1) There is no harm in asking
2) Fun is more fun when you win
3) Luck is the residue of design
4) There is always a germ of truth in "just kidding"
5) You never get a second chance to make a good first impression
6) Give a firm handshake as you stand and look a person in the eye
7) Live within your means
8) Respect your elders
9) Listening is a super power
10) Never make the first offer in a negotiation
You may not agree, but there are many more and I'm open to learning.

#5 - You never get a second chance to make a good first impression: I have a slightly different view on this. Or maybe it's the "yes, and..." view. While it's true that you should make a good first impression, you do sometimes get second chances (and third/fourth, etc.).
I think the next interaction you have with someone is an opportunity to make another "first" impression, and the other person will likely remember that one more than the one previous. Does it erase what might have happened before? Of course not, but if you allow your own mistakes to get in the way of your future interactions, you'll be giving up. Each interaction is an opportunity to fix issues from before, improve impressions you may have given before, etc. We can't let our own stumbles keep us from trying again. And, as much as possible, we shouldn't let others' stumbles keep us from giving them another chance (within reason :)).

Guest User : Marilyn PriceJudaism has a similar list that predates yours called ‘elui devarim’, these are the things and encompasses many of yours. They are said within the daily morning prayers. The ending is ‘but the study of Torah outweighs them all. I always figured that Abe Lincoln who read Bible everyday was a good model. Like you! Blessings Marilyn
