As I think back over my charmed life, I realize I have enjoyed more than my share of Glory Days, which I believe happened as a result of good planning, hard work, competitiveness and luck.   

In my case, much of my luck was not random.  I like to think it was by design, as in "You make your own luck".  

I may not have been the smartest, but that awareness fueled my outworking most.

As far as being competitive, if you know me, you know I have an insatiable (irrational) desire to win or come out on top.  It's not pretty, but it works for me.  

Then there's planning, I do lots of mental preparation ahead of time to avoid awkward surprises.  

In any case, I have enjoyed my Glory Days. The Future remains to unfold, and I can see no reason to change.

So similar to you. After flunking out of my first college, I then worked harder than everyone else the rest of th way. Mostly made use of the luck I helped make. Fred, we've both had amazing runs. Glad to share them with you.

We lived in the Beast of Times

In Beverly Hills high school we had a car club with our girls and with our own Fonzi just like Garry Marshal produced and directed "The Happy Days."

All the rest was great and particularly working with - and being included as part of the "family" after Milton Berle referred to Fran and me as the "kids" and he brought us into the membership with the Beverly Hills and NY Friars Clubs.

Amazing generation but as Fred says - for the most of us we had a wonderful time.

I like the "make your own luck" way of thinking - it allows you to exist in two mindsets at once:

 

1) plan ahead, plan for contingencies, be prepared
2) at the same time, remember that luck is still a part of life and that, no matter how much you prepare, life can and will still go another way - ways you may not have prepared for.

 

As long as you keep both of these things going, you're never thrown too far when things don't go to plan.

 

To quote an (otherwise not so great) superhero franchise: "Make the plan. Execute the plan. Expect the plan to go off the rails.....throw away the plan."
