Your Favorite Vacation?

Your Favorite Vacation?

If you've gone to recent Gotham meetings this question may be "old", however, for those that have not it is topical.

Simply put, what is your favorite all-time vacation?

Mine, because of this Winter's polar vortex, was our extended stay in Key West during which many suffered through at least three horrible storms. Our frigid Winter is the subject of Ester Horowitz's most recent Gotham City Gazette which I urge you to experience elsewhere on this site under Gotham Speaks.

As I said in the Gazette, I felt most fortunate to be "away" and felt empathy for those at home.  What's more, I understood that one so fortuitously fortunate might feel guilty,  but I could not muster up that feeling.

So for those very practical and selfish reasons it was my favorite vacation.

In any case, what was your all-time favorite vacation, practical or otherwise!

When I had a music publishing company it was named "Permanent Vacation", as a philosophy that even days at work - when it is work that you love - is like a vacation.

Also, of course, a tribute to "My Boyfriend's Back" by The Angels.

But, to Fred's question: My favorite may have been Yellowstone Park, where you stand on the crust of the earth. A memorable one from my childhood was London, when the guard at the Tower opened a side door and let me stand on the balcony where Elizabeth the First walked back and forth during her imprisonment as a teenager.

Although I don't get to travel like I used to, I've been to Australia 7 times, and 3 of those trips stand out in my mind as "tied" for favorite (one extended trip -- including the extraordinary South Island of New Zealand) with a good friend immediately after we both took the bar exam, 32 years ago; one for our honeymoon, 27 years ago; and one with our twins when they were nearly 9 years old, 14 years ago). Too many other details for a blog comment, so I'll leave it at that.

Motorcycle Trip with Alan out to Black Hills Motorcycle Rally in Sturgis, South Dakota, riding through Devils Tower, Custer State Park, Deadwood, Badlands, and all those beautiful scenic areas from cowboy movies!

Wow Riva...That's definitely on my list...I've been dreaming about riding my Harley on that same route and I'm a lot closer than you ! There is an old movie titled "Electra Glide in Blue" with Robert Blake and Billy Green Bush that takes you into that land in a great story about a motorcycle cop on a Police Harley music by James William Guercio......Any way...I digress....My life has been a vacation. Flying and living all over the world. My wife teases me for saying I've been to ALL the great beaches in the world. And I have....We owned a house on Poipu Beach on the south coast of Kauai as the kids were growing up....Having all 5 kids and the dogs in that place at the same time just blew my mind. Swimming out to the sand bar that uncovered at lower tide with wife, kids and dogs on a cloudless morning in a clear and warm ocean !!! Hoo Yah !! Fresh fish, Poki, Meyers Rum, fresh coconuts, Poi and Prime Rib.....Long toss football with my boys ...Perfect spirals...People thought I was Joe Kapp !! Anyhow...As Arnold has been quoted..."I'll Be Back..." BTW Fred....Archer asked Madolin to marry him on Kauai during an R and R from Vietnam !!

I liked all the vacations I took as an adult. As many know I define the term somewhat differently so that just about every weekend from Memorial through Labor Days serves as short stay vacations even if sleeping occurs at the location (Marisa (my daughter) named "Grand Junction" on FourSquare. Different highlights in each. The key for me in each involves how both unplanned and planned delight.

My family honeymoon after my husband and I got married. Watching our two families blend so seamlessly along with my children's excitement at being on their first cruise was amazing.

Definitely the Galapagos with the kids a few years back. Like visiting another planet! One of the coolest things about the place is that the animals have no fear of people. Huge birds with bright blue feet (called Blue Footed Boobies) just come right up to people and seem to announce, "I'm a Blue-Footed Boobie. What are you?" Best animal of all were the giant tortoises. The size of a Smart Car. And they can live for a hundred and fifty years. Local law requires tourists to have a licensed guide, and Andres was terrific with his impeccable English.
