Torn between two menu items, the friendly server comes over and wants to know if we have any questions.  Yes, I say, what is better, the swordfish or the black cod?  Or the branzino and the vegetarian mousaka?

Sometimes the waiter seems stumped, as if he or she had never ever given that any thought before.  Then they offer their opinion, and I wonder, do I really care what this person likes more?   They may have awful taste.  They may like Mongolian Boodog or fried Tarantula.  Other times though, the waiter points to something with such beaming confidence I am left with little choice.

Speaking of food, here are two new Upper West side eateries that are worthy of mention.  First is Cibe e Vino at 2418 Broadway (89th Street), a small and intimate Northern Italian restaurant the opened about five months ago.  Most likely one of the owners, Elena, a tall, beautiful brunette from Macedonia will great you with a smile.  The other is Tessa at 349 Amsterdam Avenue, which has been open for one week.  Will Tracy, former owner of Punch among others, teamed with Larry Bellone to create what has already become a hit in the neighborhood.  Check them out.  And don't be shy about asking your waiter what is good.

My problem is that I like everything (including on other's plates).

Branzino always wins for me. But you have given me food for thought with this topic. :)

I usually ask which dish is more popular. If I am new to a restaurant I ask about the signature dishes. Nina Krauthamer (can't figure out how to log in from my phone)

I find asking for a hair sample and analyzing it in my handy portable DNA sequencer allows me to ascertain the probability that the servers tastes and mine will be highly correlated and then I can make an informed decision to go with the suggestion or ask the server what he/she would least like on the menu...sorry, it's been an energetic day so the part of my brain that attempts humor is highly active.

I usually will ask from among two dishes I might like, for example skirt or shell or shell or filet. And sometimes we ask what does the server like. We have faves from take-out to lunch to brunch to various dinner. cuisines (as well as a fave place to hold my meetings).

Can you get me a menu from the latter, for my mother? A t-shirt is probably unlikely.
