Veteran Gothamites have a direct connection to Welles, as his dad, Jefferson, was a long time Gotham member who would poignantly tell the fabled story, always in tears and before modern day recognition.
It is a story of self sacrifice and extraordinary altruism which inspired Gotham to commence, in 2012, recognition of similar, yet far short, self sacrifice by members, in the form of our highest honor, the Red Bandana Award.

A sad day. It touches us…
A sad day. It touches us differently this year. My son-in-law's father was killed in the towers. We have felt his pain every year since he came into the family. He was only 8 years old when his father was killed. But now there is a grandchild, nine month old Skylar, who is named for our son-in-law's father Skylar brings so much joy into both families. But there is the additional sadness today about how my son-in-law's father was denied knowing his granddaughter and that she was denied having him as a grandfather. Never ever forget.
