They won't change and they get minimal if any time on the schedule. That's how I handle it.

If I have a choice, I choose not to be around that person. 

If I don't have a choice, I try to let it flow and respond as little as possible (I've never done any martial arts, but I like to think of it as a "be like a willow in the wind" concept where you let the opponent's own momentum work against them). The other person may or may not understand why I'm doing that, they may even think I'm not listening or I'm rude, but they do know that the conversation isn't going anywhere so hopefully they change course or walk away. :)  

Rude is an approach :)

We’ve discussed & generally that those kinds of entities get excised or purged to the extent practicable from all phases of my life. I argue for positive reinforcement & intervention only where threat of injury — especially to others — appears likely 

My family tells me things have to even out, and that you have to take the good with the bad.  I always respond, "Where is that written?  Why can't I just take the good and not the bad?"
