I am going to follow up on a blog I wrote two weeks ago concerning news stories that unite us. This is also a follow up to Corey’s blog from yesterday about the Knicks win.

As I know that Corey is a longtime Knicks fan, I was happy that he was the first Gotham blogger to write about their tremendous win. As a person who is not really a sports fan, I am happy to be the second blogger to do so.

When I came home from a work event on Wednesday night, I was shocked to see that my husband had the game on, but on silent, and was not really watching. When I saw the score I knew why and pulled out a book to read.

As time went on, he slowly increased the sound on the television and started cheering. Within the last five minutes of that game, I put my book down, became engaged in the game and screamed with him when they won. For game five I watched along with him, cheering and screaming, throughout.

For a period of time, the Knicks did something few things can accomplish—they united New York, even those of us who are not sports fans.  I loved watching the scenes of people from every borough, background, and neighborhood cheering together. The usual hustle of the city seemed to pause as strangers high-fived, celebrated, and talked basketball.

Wins like this remind us that sports can also have unique way of bringing people together and making New York feel like one big community.

Who’s going to the parade?
