Last week I was on vacation in North Miami for Presidents week. These days the kids get the whole week off from school, not just Monday which is Presidents Day. I dont recall when I was in high school getting an entire week off in February. Are the teachers unions just that much better at negotiating or are the politicians that much worse and spend the tax dollar without any thought. While I was in Florida those kids had school Tuesday to Friday.

I think in NY, it's called winter break. Since school starts and ends a month earlier (heat) down south, they get extra days off for Thanksgivng "week". Our spring break is in March. It made planning vacations a bit tricky at first. Federal rules dictate number of days a year students must attend or they lose funding.

It's actually winter break and not exactly for president's day, they just seem to align. The February break became a staple in many districts, including New York City, during the 1970s oil crisis to reduce heating costs. It was made permanent in many places by the early 1990s.

I don't think they're spending any extra, probably less from not having to run the entire school system.

Mid-winter recess resulted from a contract negotiation between the aptly wrongly and undeservedly named America's Mayor and the NYC teacher's union as part of an effort to impose a longer workday for teachers.
