The Holiday Shopping Season is Upon Us

My children, every year, immediately get into the holiday shopping season. They love going to the mall at 5:00 a.m. on Black Friday with their friends and cousins. As much as they love the “bargains” they think they are getting,  I believe, what they enjoy most is the social aspect of Black Friday; being in the mall in the early morning hours with their family and friends.

I do not go with them to the mall on Black Friday. I do not like crowded malls and, more importantly, I prefer to sleep in on the day after Thanksgiving. I prefer to shop on Cyber-Monday, no crowds, I can comfortably sit at my desk, and the bargains are the same.

I have noticed, however, that Cyber Monday seems to have come early this year. As I sit here writing my blog, on Saturday morning, my daughter is sitting next to me happily shopping on Abercrombie.com. And, apparently, not only is everything  fifty percent off-- and cheaper than it was at the mall early Friday morning--  but shipping is free all weekend.

Are you shopping today? If so, on what websites?

Yes, I will be Cyber shopping today. Amazon, Macys, Bloomingdales, B & H camera store, Best Buy. Crowds not for me either!

I missed most of Black Friday craziness as I took my son on a day road trip to Saratoga Springs in upstate NY (wife was working her retail job so I felt for her madness). We did some window shopping, enjoyed the small town feel of Main Street and ate a bunch of treats, father and son style. To me, that is what Black Friday is all about, time spent with loved ones. When I got home, I had missed most of the bargains on line (sold out). But there was nothing I couldn't live without in any case. After 15 years working in retail, I prefer to avoid the crowds.

I have good friends who love
going out Thursday night at midnight after Thanksgiving. They buy all of these "bargains" and have a great time. And then they spend the next two weeks returning everything!
I don't like crowds either - but I'm a shopping procrastinator so . . .

I think I'm waiting this year. Working on my list a little more carefully.
