Vacationing With The President

Vacationing With The President

Anyone who vacations on Martha's Vineyard when the President is there has a story to tell. Here's mine.
Last Sunday, we were walking down Main Street in Edgartown and I saw a black shoulder bag on a bench in front of the liquor store. I poked my head inside the store to let the clerk know about the bag. He told me that he knew about it, but didn't want to touch it since President Obama was having dinner at the restaurant next door. The clerk was waiting for a policeman.
We continued up Main Street on our way to the car. A waitress in front of THE restaurant asked if we wanted to come in for an early dinner. She even made light of our very casual (non-dinner) dress. Given how dressed up everyone else going into the  restaurant appeared to be, she seemed to be the only one who didn't know who was soon coming for dinner.
We had made a reservation at one of our favorite restaurants  in another town and my sense of commitment carried the moment. We walked to the car.
As we drove "up-Island" from Edgartown, I noticed a motorcycle policeman waiting at a major intersection that leads to either Oak Bluffs or Edgartown. A few minutes later, the presidential motorcade passed us going the other way.
As we had a wonderful dinner, we wondered what would have been if we had stayed in Edgartown.
The next day, we mentioned passing the motorcade to a gallery director we visited. She said that she heard that Obama ate in Oak Bluffs the night before.
Rumors abound when the President is on the Island. I'm happy we stuck with our plans.
