As we approach Thanksgiving in the week that follows the one that starts today, I call attention to a special day that takes place the Tuesday AFTER Thanksgiving, this year, Tuesday November 29, 2022:

GIVING TUESDAY.

Thanksgiving became a time to focus on the causes we support and I devote a blog to giving on or around Thanksgiving. Last year, I discussed the charities and causes I annually (and more often than that) support; I certainly urge continued support and giving for each. This year, I highlight an especially compelling cause that focuses on the needs of our “elders.” To quote from its “Capital Campaign One-Pager”

Several years ago, Services Now for Adult Persons, Inc. (SNAP), an innovative social service agency dedicated to improving and enhancing the quality of life for older adults in Queens, embarked on an effort to upgrade from its existing facility which no longer meets existing and future needs and from which SNAP must vacate...To realize this goal, SNAP purchased a building and began renovations. Based on the input from the architects and contractors, the Board has determined that SNAP needs $3,000,000 to properly complete and outfit the facility to meet current and future needs.

I chair the board of directors and board Vice-Chair Florence Katz chairs the Capital Campaign.

More about SNAP (from the “One-Pager”):

“SNAP started its journey over 40 years ago (established 1980) in response to the concern of the community members, professionals and public officials about the lack of social services and programs for older adults in Eastern Queens communities of Bellerose, Floral Park, Glen Oaks and Queens Village; today, SNAP programs also serve seniors in Bayside, Cambria Heights, Douglaston, Fresh Meadows, Hollis, Hollis Hills, Holliswood, Jamaica, Jamaica Estates, Laurelton, Little Neck, Oakland Gardens and Rosedale. SNAP continues to provide both direct services as well as access to all community resources for independent seniors, those in need of support in the home, and those with cognitive issues in need of monitoring.”

You can view SNAP’s many services and programs by visiting SNAP’s website at www.snapqueens.org.

Tomorrow and every Monday, Gotham allows is members to post appeals to support causes on its Fredslist listserve. We call it MAD (as in Make A Difference) Mondays. And two weeks from tomorrow, Giving Tuesday follows. And on the Tuesday that follows (December 6), Gotham will announce its awards following its Season of Giving at its Annual Holiday Party (this year again held virtually).

And in case you require some further inspiration...perhaps some songs.

So as the title “recommends,” This year, make giving a SNAP
