The Shattered Vessel

We recently visited the Conservation Laboratory at the Brooklyn Museum. Explaining the intricate process of restoring/repairing a beautiful glass goblet from the 1800s, the Conservator shared the lengthy and detailed analysis that goes into determining the chemical composition of the glass in an effort to match the most-appropriate epoxy for the repair.

And she shared that there was a little box on the shelf that contained a shattered glass vessel. A valuable representation that was in so many pieces that the conservators could not develop a strategy to repair it—yet. The little box stays on the shelf — waiting. And the conservators wait. They are hopeful, yet confident, that someday the technique will evolve, or be discovered, and the epoxy will be developed, to restore that little vessel.

It is a lesson for all of us. The problem that seems unsolvable today, will, someday, find itself resolution. Have the faith and hope of the Conservator.
