The Evolution of Hair

The Evolution of Hair

Everyone was home last weekend. It was one of those special times. As my family has been known to do, we spent a whole evening watching home movies.

I can’t really explain why, but this time I was completely taken by the evolution of our hair, each and every one of us. The movies went back to literally to the day Jaclyn was born and beyond. Let’s just say we looked different. It was very 90’s.

Over the years I had puffy hair, straight hair, combination puffy and straight hair, short hair, long hair and ultimately lots and lots of curls. Bill had facial hair. Really, he had facial hair when we met. It was gone shortly after we were married. I was blissfully happy and never asked – but I came home from work one day, he had shaved half his moustache and was trying to convince me to go out for dinner. Always a jokester. Back then, I gave him a hard time and made him shave the other half. Now, I would be the first one heading out for dinner.

My dad was bald – always. At least as far back as I can remember and in all of our home movies. He had that classic ring around the back of his head. I remember my grandmother coloring (and cutting) that ring for my father for the longest time. In the video from Jaclyn’s bat mitzvah, he audibly asks the videographer to give him hair and a moustache. Wouldn’t you know, in the edited film version they Raggedy Ann hair magically appeared. He loved that.

I can’t tell you why I was taken with the hair evolution as we strolled together down memory lane but it did sort of feel like part of the journey.
