A new musical has hit the stage in New York.  And get this… it’s about divorce, depression, and bedwetting.  More surprisingly, it is a raucous comedy.  Comedian and actress, Sarah Silverman, infamous for her comedy routines, spotlighting her very open attitudes and vibrant language about sex had written her memoir “The Bedwetter” in 2010.

After Adam Schlesinger, an Emmy and Grammy award winning musician, read the book, he convinced Sarah that her story had the makings of a musical, and that began their collaboration. After working on the musical for years the show was on its way to the Atlantic Theater Stage to open in April, 2020.  Sadly, Schlesinger died of Covid in March, 2020 and the opening of the play was delayed by COVID until May, 2022.

The play tells the story of a ten year-old girl trying to make friends in a new school following her parents divorce. Her very unusual sense of humor features curse words more in tune with football locker rooms.  Her dad has taught her that dirty jokes can help you make friends and the plan works until her sleepover ends with a bedwetting incident that becomes the talk of the school.

The actors are cast beautifully.  The songs are tuneful and moving.  More importantly, hilarity reigns in the theater.  The non-stop laughs bring back the memories of great comedies  like “The Producers” and “The Book of Mormon.”

I have a strong feeling that the show will move to Broadway.  If you are ready to be moved by a story, impressed by the amazing child actors, and laugh repeatedly— get your tickets!
