I was just talking to someone who recently retired as COO of a large not for profit.  I asked him how he felt and whether he missed it.  Not at all, he said.  In fact, that same not for profit pays him well to consult.  As a consultant all he has to do is give his opinion.  No decisions, no pressure, no responsibility.   He tells them what he thinks and they can do what they want with it.

He mentioned that a few other organizations pay him just to say he is on board as a consultant.  They want his name. 

This seems to me like a really good way to make money.

Even better, look at some ads.  Like the one in the Times today for a Citizen watch that has a picture of Kelly Clarkson.  Just her picture and her name and a picture of a watch.   All she has to do is smile, and she gets a check.   That is even better than consulting.
