Quite A Mistake

Quite A Mistake

I didn't watch most of the Oscars Sunday night, although it was on in the background for a while. I happened to sit down for the very end, just as Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty were walking on stage to present the Best Picture award. I was really taken by Faye Dunaway's dress.

But when Warren Beatty seemed confused as he was preparing to announce the winner, that didn't make sense to me. The rest of the presentation was a little surreal. I saw an Oscars staffer behind Jordan Horowitz, a La La Land producer, and it looked like he was literally taking the statue away from one of the winners. I even commented to Bill about how odd that was.

And then the unthinkable -- "There's a mistake. Moonlight, you guys won best picture." Dropped jaws, celebrities and friends up on their feet, shock, confusion, surprise. Keep going. It was quite the thing to see.

But for me, the take away was grace. Horowitz went on to say, loud and clear into the microphone -- "I'm going to be really proud to hand this to my friends from Moonlight".

You have to think about what it must have felt like to have the most coveted award in your industry in your hand one minute, and literally gone the next. It could not have been an easy moment. And certainly, not a moment you can plan for. I guarantee that as each of the celebrities in the room was planning their (hopeful) acceptance speeches, none planned for how to give that speech and then hand over their award to someone else.

So, to the producers and cast of La La Land, I extend my heartfelt congratulations. I haven't seen the film yet and I'm sure I will. But this congratulatory message is about showing the world how to win and how to lose and how to do both with grace and class.

PS: A special thank you to Rona for not writing this blog. I was convinced I was going to lose the topic.
