I have come to learn that women do not like to be called cute. Unless they are under 12. Much better to use words like "absolutely" and "gorgeous". That is why I have to change where I get my coffee in the morning.

I was in my usual place waiting to be handed my coffee cup when I overheard a conversation between a customer and one of the counter girls. She looked a bit unhappy, as if he had said something wrong and hurt her feelings. Apparently he had told her that she was "kind of cute."  Just plain "cute" is not particularly complimentary, and "kind of cute" is telling someone they are less than cute, so  that comment had not gone over very well.

He tried to make things better, but it only got worse. He said that he used to think she was kind of cute, and now he thinks she is "kind of pretty."  An intended compliment maybe, but a stupid thing to say, I thought as I stood there listening to this. I felt bad for this very nice girl (who incidently in my opinion was not particulary cute or pretty, which is not the point) and thought it would be best if this guy would just shut up.  I got my coffee and left and do not know how this conversation ended.

The problem is that every time I get my coffee in the morning I see her and I think about this and it makes me sad and I feel badly. I need to find a new place to go.
