As you know and feel, this summer has been extremely hot.  The heat has been consistent with few days below 85 let alone 90.  I am very lucky to have an escape that works so well and is so close and cheap ($35 for a Senior couple)

Sea Cliff Beach on Hempstead Harbor (Long Island Sound) has a residents only beach with a cafe, umbrellas, chairs, showers, etc. The staff monitors the water quality every day and occasionally the beach is closed due to the spill offs from the road after a heavy rain.  Before the Hempstead Harbor Coalition began their fight to clean up the harbor, swimming was not a pleasant option.  Years ago, we would drive to Bayville for a quick swim to get away from the polluted water.

But, now I have found the perfect activity to enjoy the water, sky, boats, birds, and sunsets. I follow the tides and make sure to come an hour before or after the high tide.  The water starts gradually and then goes very deep.  The Sound is different every day.  The winds and currents impact the feel of the water.  It can be warm one moment and then a cool current will arrive.  The water feels alive and everyday feels truly different.

I enjoy the ocean, lakes, and pools.  But, following the tide this summer has provided the best swimming experience I have ever had.

What is your favorite place to swim?
