In these Black Swan times I have a long long ago connection.

When I was a young boy my mother told me that her father died in the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic.

I mentioned it to Nancy and, of course, it was news to her and her first impulse was to Google him.  Later she told me she found nothing.

Yet, it was Nancy’s impulse to probe Google that resulted in one of the greatest WOW! moments of my life.

Acting upon Nancy’s Google impulse, I dug extremely deep down into the most remote region of Google and found a “grave stone“ site. Can you imagine? A “grave stone” site exists.
grave

Anyway, the grave stone pictured popped up when I typed in 1918 Spanish flu and my grandfather’s name.  I was shocked, yet uncertain because of the long unfamiliar name set forth.

Undeterred, I texted the grave stone picture (and name) to my sister and she told me that our mother once, just once, told her my grandfather’s full name and it was the very same!

What are the odds on the above confluence of events resulting is such a completely unexpected WOW! moment?

Truth is far stranger than fiction and Google is all knowing!

Thank you Nancy!

It is very meaningful to find these connections to the past. It is where we come from and, I believe, in our blood.

The connections to our past help root us and give us perspective about our own purpose. Great find!

I love this story. And without Google, the artifact would not have been "findable".

We had found-on Google- a 1930 census form that had my mom's family listed. It mistakenly had listed my Mom as 9 years old when, in fact, she was 9 months. I thought the find was extraordinary. My mom, however, couldn't get over the error in her age. :)

Amazing that the history is there for us through technology.
Had you known, he lived and died in Guatemala?

Since I started my cousins cocktails we have discovered all sorts of things that are available online especially on Ancestry. I found my Grandmother’s naturalization papers, manifest from the boat shecame on, my father’s draft card and a whole bunch of other things.

Definitely worthy further research. His name alone could make him a character in a timeless novel. As your grandfather, who knows what mischief he was up to. Try Ancestry.com. Happy hunting!
