Inspiration comes from some surprising places. We recently finished watching all four seasons of Grace and Frankie on Netflix. If you haven’t seen the show, it’s wonderful.

Don’t worry there won’t be spoiler alerts in this blog. The story is about Grace and Frankie, two women who start life over at 70ish. While the show is funny, and at times touching, I found myself drawn to these characters in an inspiring way. The characters aren’t letting age define what they can and can’t do. They face challenges that come their way, make mistakes and live life on their own terms.

As soon as we finished the last episode, I got on the Internet to find out if/when season 5 would be available. Curious about the women behind the female leads I did some research and found out Jane Fonda will be 81 and Lily Tomlin will be 79 this year. Not only do these women look amazing, they are still doing what they love.

Jane Fonda has promoted health and fitness for as long as I can remember; and while I’m benefitting from living a healthy lifestyle myself, I was still surprised at the inspiration I felt to continue and increase my efforts on that path. I want to be healthy and able to do what I love 20 years from now. I want to be able to redefine myself, try new things and start new phases in my life when the opportunities come along regardless of what birthday I’ve celebrated.

Why aren’t more women (and men) beginning new things later in life? Why do so many slow down, or worse stop living, because of their age, which is really only a number? Why should age define us? It shouldn’t. As long as we’re healthy, we have every reason to live life to the fullest and should do just that.

So, let’s start this conversation. What can we do to stay healthy and fit in order to life a full and exciting life? What do you want to do in the next 10, 20, 30 years and what should you be doing to ensure you’re healthy enough to make it happen. I’m happy to share what I’m doing and the resources I’ve found along the way to help anyone who’d like to get started. It’s not too late.
