The author of 8 spirited children and 31 grand-spirited-children. She was 97 years young when she left this earth, but her legacy lives on. She was a quiet, kind, sly woman from the town of Reading, Pennsylvania. Fondly known as Pennsylvania Dutch. “S” cookies, Pecan Balls, Buckeyes, Pecan Pie, Lemon Bars, Cherry Bars and tasty dishes filled her kitchen and our bellies. A shark of a card player, a writer, poet, and a hell of a scrabble player. She could stitch, sew, hem, and outwit you with “Grace”. Her kids often called her “Gracie Slick”. Grandaddy Coleman LOVED his wife, Grace. In my forty-something years, I’ve never heard her yell. If we made her angry, Grandpa Bill would set us straight. Only 2.5 weeks ago, I visited her in Sarasota, Florida. I brought her a present of fresh peaches, apricots, and a parasol with blue beaded crystal finishings, so her beautiful skin wouldn’t get burned in the sun. This visit was special. We were getting to know each other as two ladies comparing notes about life. We chatted about hip pain, exercise and staying fit. A budding friendship between two ladies, instead of Grammy to grand-daughter. Another growing moment between the two of us. Now, I notice her everywhere. In everything I do, she shows up. I read recipe magazines, play cards when I’m bored. I write, have a love affair with words and live only 45 minutes from where she grew up. I’m her legacy, as are all my Aunts, Uncles, Cousins, Mum, Brothers, Nieces, and Nephews. We are her legacy. I still say I am her favorite granddaughter :) Tricia, Brianna, and Linda, she really loved her Granddaughters. With honor, love, and “Grace”. CMB

Carly that was a beautiful tribute to a wonderful, loving and special grandmother granddaughter relationship. Anyone who has been blessed with the closeness of a loving and tight family relationship, would relate perfectly to your deep connection. Their loss is significant but the joy, history and influence from a special relationship is indelibly etched upon the soul. It becomes forever a source of strength that grounds you. Your grandmother’s wisdom will come to you when you need it most, her humor when you need a laugh and as you live your life, she will make her visits through those great memories and they will warm your heart. Loss is the crappy part of life but having the memory of a loved one live on, you will never truly be without them and that is a true source of solace. As is in Judaism... “May their memory be a blessing”
