Museum going is an easy and accessible outing for New Yorkers.  Tourists from all over the world make sure to take in at least one museum on their New York City visits.  The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim, and the Whitney are the top attractions.  Their offerings are world class and their new fall shows are all great.

But, the American Folk Art Museum has one of the most intriguing exhibits of the season.  The artist is unique and his paintings bring a warm reaction.  Morris Hirshfield came to painting, in his sixties, after a career as a tailor and shoe designer.  His inspirations were: movies, burlesque posters, biblical heroes, and folk art.

The paintings are eye catching in their use of color and contrasting imagery.  From the moment you walk into the exhibit, you are hooked.  The show features 45 paintings and is mounted cleverly with insightful explanations.

The show runs till January 29 and is free for all visitors.  The museum is at 2 Lincoln Square right across  from Lincoln Center.
