I realize that many things I do tend to embarrass my children, such as kiss them in public or comment on their Facebook posts (a sin I have never repeated). Lately I have noticed, however, that even my use of certain words can cause them embarrassment or, alternatively, have them in hysterics. Recently, I used the word, “dungarees,” a word I freely used at their age. Immediately, I was faced with a tremendous amount of eye rolling and the laughter. When their laughter died down, I was informed that the proper terms were “jeans” or “skinnies,” and anything else would be “old fashioned.” I can only assume that this also means that I can no longer use the term, “blue jeans.”
My mother-in-law made the mistake of using an “old fashioned” term recently while on vacation with us. While we were sitting at the pool, she asked what time we were planning on eating “supper.” Luckily, my children waited until she left the pool before they made fun of the use of the word, “supper.”
Do you eat supper in your dungarees? Do you know of any other words I should refrain from using in front of my kids in order to maintain my dignity?
