Cutting the Line

Cutting the Line

The line for the "by invitation members-only” preview of the reopening of the renovated Museum of Modern Art was around the block as we found our way to its. As we took our place in line, the woman ahead of us was complaining to a MOMA representative that she was canceling her membership because waiting on such a line was no way to be treated as a Member for so many years.

I waited, noted the time - the doors would open in ten minutes - and felt assured that the line would soon move quickly.

As we approached the entrance, there was a slight break in the line and people walking toward the end, perhaps mistaking a gap in the line for the end, fell in ahead a few people ahead of us. I'm not sure whether it was intentional (that is, they cut the line) or not. However, the woman ahead of us (the soon-to-be former member) would have no part of it.

She yelled at the people ahead and told them to get to the back of the line. A group apologized, left and moved towards the end. Two people ignored the admonition.

The woman proceeded to walk up to the two and confronted them as her companion pointed that the end of the line was “way way back”.

I don't like it when people cut in line, but I rarely say anything. This was Cutting in Line, New York City style …. and at your peril.
