Cake or Ice Cream?
Cake or Ice Cream?

During this pandemic we have celebrated a lot of milestone birthdays, 25, 30, 85(my mother-in-law) and soon 60 (my husband). In planning these celebrations and working to make them special during the pandemic a material issue has come up each time, what sort of the birthday cake, cake or ice cream?

For my birthday, although it was not a milestone, it was not even a decision, I love cake. More specifically, I love frosting. I look at cake as a vehicle for delivering the frosting. To make it special, my husband ordered a rainbow layered cake with chocolate frosting online from Carlo’s Bakery. To me, that was the perfect cake, thick fudgy frosting, rainbow sprinkles, and moist cake.

For my mother-in-law and stepson, there was also no issue, their cakes were ice cream cakes. Neither really likes cake (totally unfathomable to me) and love chocolate ice cream. So, for both of them we ordered their favorite-Carvel-with three quarters chocolate and one quarter vanilla ice cream, as a concession to the vanilla eaters. And covered with a lot of fudge.

What kind of birthday cake eater are you? Ice cream or cake?

    Like Chocolate
If Ice Cream cake must be predominately chocolate Ice Cream and fudge.
BUT prefer yellow cake with multi layers of Chocolate Fudge frosting inside and out, preferably from LuLus in Fresh Meadows.

I prefer am Ice cream cake, just opposite in flavors. 2/3 vanilla and 1/3 chocolate with extra Carvel crunch in the middle. I also get in white frosting, no coloring and have them sprinkle more crunch on the top of the cake. Can't get enough crunch. Their fudge is just too sweet.

CAKE! My wife, who is amazing, likes to bake/decorate cakes when we celebrate at home. My favorite of all time was vanilla sponge cake with pistachio filling (which happens to be my favorite ice cream flavor). What really took the "cake" though, was the personalized NY Yankees decorations. Wish I could post a photo!

We love cake and ice cream. For non-vegan family members the Ice Cream Stop in Glen Cove has been making a special ice cream cake for us for close to 30 years---we always add a second regular cake which we now order from Madam Butterfly in Babylon. They are outstanding and make vegan cakes as well as regular that are amazing. Confetti Cake and Strawberry Shortcake tend to be the favorites----although my family adds homemade lemon meringue pie on my birthday. Never too much cake and ice cream!!

I love cake with ice cream, made of ice cream, or without ice cream. Coffee cake, bundt cake, sponge cake, layer cake, upside-down cake, you name it I like it. As for ice cream ... I prefer vanilla (not French or with bean specs) and reject anything along the lines of Superman or bubble gum. Now I'm having a craving for a cake I ate as a kid in Detroit that was chocolate cake, chocolate frosting with buttercream between the two. We called it bump cake. I wonder if I can get it online.
