Are You Procrastinating?

Are You Procrastinating?

Based on my very informal survey, I would say that procrastination is on the rise. Yes, we have probably all fallen victim to this periodically. However, our current times seem to be the culprit now. With all the added distractions, disruptions, and challenges of running a business during these unusual times, I personally have found myself procrastinating more frequently.

Of course, there will always be those projects which are a bit anxiety provoking as they chart new territory or seem daunting due to their size. After all, there are just certain days where I don’t want to deal with another potentially stressful task.

When I realized that there were 5 projects that I kept moving from one to-do list to the next, it was time to assess the situation and make some changes. I realized that some of these projects, like sharing videos on LinkedIn each week, really needed to be done. While others, which may have seemed like good business development ideas at one time, were no longer relevant.

Once I had narrowed this list down to 3 projects, I prioritized the list and set a goal for completing each one. That was the easy part…. In order to get over the procrastination hurdle, I knew that I had to divide each of these projects into a series of easier to tackle small tasks. I then checked my tendency to be a perfectionist at the door and dove in. As I wanted to just get these tasks off my to-do list, I made sure to block time first thing in the morning (I’m a morning person) and just got started.

As often happens, getting started was the most difficult part. I’m very results oriented so getting these projects completed by their deadlines was no problem once I got going. I am now making best efforts to ward off signs of another bout of prolonged procrastination!

How do you handle procrastination?
