A Night To Remember

A Night To Remember

Last Friday night was one for the ages.

Top props for my Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity brother Jason Greenberg (Phoenix Adjusters) for taking me to see, inter alia, our fraternity brother Robert Zimmerman perform at The Outlaw Music Festival at the beautiful Jones Beach Theater.

With one exception, it was a perfectly entertaining night as we partied with my son Alex, his wife Jessica and others at Jason's special VIP stage side table.

At some point, the Outlaw spirit overcame me and I found myself flashing wrist bands through numerous security check points on my way to a stage front photo opp of Zim (pictured).  I must say the covert journey was exciting and upon my return, I proudly shared my closeup pics at our table.

Zim was in top voice and I recognized "Highway 61" and "All Along the Watchtower" in his long surprisingly energetic set.

Between sets the question was raised as to why Willie Nelson closed the show and not the former.

However, 92 year old Willie was clearly the peoples choice, as we sang and willed him along, virtually giving breath, as he croaked his standards with his seeming last gasps.
I truly felt as if we were participating in an inspirational, survival of a train wreck, performance!

Speaking of train wrecks, while Jason and I gave rapt attention to the Outlaws, we were simultaneously (multi tasking) following a Yankee game on our phones and, just as the concert ended, we lost 13-12 in a horrible game only Rod Serling could have scripted.

In sum, it was a most extraordinary night to remember. Thank you Jason and everyone else who made it happen.  It was a night like no other night!

Forever young/sweet, sweet seasons those days of youthful music

We had a similar experience 20 years ago when we asked Tony Martin, at 90, asked Fran if he could sing at Sid Caesar's 80th birthday at the Beverly Hills Friars Club. We got him a pianist and it went really well. So well that he got an engagement at one of the last of the hotels, Ironically, we had a group from LA visiting in NY and we hired a small van and went to see the show. OMG, the hotel looked like a skeleton of its former "face." After a short while, two busloads of the audience looked like 80 years old +. Shortly after that the MC looked like he was 90. Then Tony came on stage and sang for 75 minutes - amazing too. Michael Feinstein was so impressed he engaged Tony in Michel's Room on Par k Avenue. After that Michael engaged Tony to sing at his other Room at the famous Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Michael flew out just to see Tony sing because he was so excited when he introduced Tony. Your story emitted a wonderful memory.
