Many of us have been at this for a long time.  Many of us are just getting started.   Many of us who have been at this for a long time, are really just getting started or perhaps getting started with something new.

I am talking about business development, of course.

Across the span of our professions, we have all learned some tips, regardless of when you started on this journey.   As a result, I am firmly convinced we can learn from each other.

And so that we can really learn from each other Gotham friends, I ask you to share (1) one tip you have learned about how to develop great business or (2) one obstacle that you learned you needed to overcome in order to develop great business.  You could also share both!

OK, I will start.  My first tip is to relax, have fun and make a friend first -- because when you are in the right circles, business always follows.

Your turn.

I knew I had to separate myself from competitors I developed after becoming moderately successful. My business was a niche retained search firm specializing in design leaders. Essentially I volunteered to write articles, I wrote letters to the editor, I went to every conference, I offered to speak at them and at colleges and universities. I would often ask questions when I was in audiences making sure I stated my name. That’s how I got to know everyone (and they saw who I was). I made sure to introduce myself to other speakers and the people who ran the organizations that held the conferences. I made lots of friends and used this methodology to become a global player.
