A Keyless Society
A Keyless Society

I have recently noticed that I am using keys less and less. I recently leased a new GMC Terrain and, for the first time, I have a keyless car. It has me a bit unnerved because I am afraid that, one day, I will leave the key fob in the car and lock myself out. Or keep the keyfob in my pocketbook and forget to lock the car when I leave.

Additionally, my husband has installed “smart” technology in our house. For the past several months my husband and our kids have used an App to lock and unlock the front door. Initially, I would not even download the App, preferring to rely on my house key. They finally convinced me, however, to try the App. I did so reluctantly but, I must admit, that I like it. It’s very easy just to press an App to lock and unlock the front door.

Are keys becoming obsolete?

What happens to smart locks on doors in the event of an electrical or phone/app service provider outage?

I'm holding on to my house key...my one remaining vestige of things past.

With key-less cars, you cannot lock your key in the car. The doors will automatically unlock with usually a warning chime. This prevents that from happening.
I too wonder what happens if there is a power outage or internet/phone is down. Imagine not getting in your house? I will keep the key to the front door thank you.

Problem with keyless car is that I never know where my keys are in my pocketbook when I actually need them.
