A Favorite Childhood Food
A Favorite Childhood Food

I was reminiscing with a friend the other day about how much food played a part in our respective childhoods. So many of my memories circle back to something having to do with food. Whether it was a special restaurant or a special recipe, the food theme was prevalent.

For example, anyone remember Cooky’s Steak Pub? It was a favorite evening out in our family, always with my grandparents. The shrimp on the salad bar were plentiful but the star of the evening was the banana bread. My grandmother would bring one of the supermarket produce bags she had saved, cleaned and neatly stored so that she could bring a helping or two home with her.

My mom made some classic dishes that have survived to this day. Rice Krispie Chicken was a favorite recipe then and my kids will tell you now as well.

I also remember that my mom used to entertain frequently, and I was always the helper. She made a stir fry dish for company that was terrific and my job for most of the afternoon was to cut up the chicken and the steak.

I could go on – but do you have any memories of food that take you back?

Can't believe my mom made tongue regularly and leg of lamb.

My mom was an excellent chef, although there was always alcohol predominant in the recipe. She would eat out and complain," they used milk, instead of heavy cream!' Always an adventure. Probably why I was inspired to make a living as a chef in NYC for many years. And why i love bacon, though never during Lent.

Cooky's Steak Pub?? I could make a whole meal out of the banana bread and shrimp. And then when I went to college there was one right near the school that offered unlimited wine and beer. Needless to say, nothing else was needed.

Grandma's Fishcakes with spaghetti. Mashed potatoes and spinach mixed together. Nathans hot dogs and French fries ( original one in Coney Island). My mother's chopped liver, potatoe salad, vegetable cutlets. And the best of all was a lunch of cold leftover meatloaf on a roll with ketchup.

Happy Childhood memories of 3 generations (me, Mommy, Bubby) all together cooking for Jewish Holidays! So, why do I never cook now?

Until we discover Yonah Shimmel's on Houston Street on the LES, I would lament the closing of Jerry's Knishes on the Rockaway boardwalk. Rarely see cherry cheese and cheese varieties elsewhere.
