Not a football reference nor to the number of homers Pete Alonso slugged in his rookie year with the Mets but to the number of years elapsed between the first time I saw Neil Young in concert and the show I took daughter Marisa to last night at Jones Beach. Yesterday, I passed 30 days following my hip replacement surgery so I found it particularly invigorating to get out and about in that fashion. Last weekend at Citi Field for Nolan McLean's debut, I used the walker; yesterday a cane so some improvement. Neil's setlist spanned his career in and out of bands and solo from Buffalo Springfield to supergroup Crosby Stills Nash & Young and Crazy Horse (I had to write the number as well because the blog program requires three characters minimum in the title.).
The show was billed, "Neil Young & The Chrome Hearts Love Earth World Tour." The band featured guitarist Micah Nelson (son of Willie), the rhythm section of Lucas Nelson’s Promise of the Real: bassist Corey McCormick and drummer Anthony LoGerfo, and organist Spooner Oldham. They played just a tad shy of two hours, opening at 8:40 p.m.
I exchanged some texts pre-show and during the concert with Gotham's Jason Greenberg who also attended.
Highlights for me included long time fave, "When You Dance" from my fave anc Neil's third Album, "After the Gold Rush." Also, "Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)" from "Rust Never Sleeps."
Marisa enjoyed the show but shared she only knew on song performed, the encore "Rockin' in the Free World." On the drive home, I played "After the Gold Rush" and his first album with Crazy Horse, "Everyone Know this is Nowhere" which preceded Gold Rush.
I am glad I was able to make this wonderful show!
