From time to time, members of our tribe express interest in recycling their electronics.  Below are some locations and dates in and around the five boroughs.  Non-City resident will not be turned away.

It must be spring because we are just busting at the seams with electronic waste recycling events, composting workshops, and East River Park stewardship. And we're also looking for a few great folks to join the team in the warehouse as staff and interns. Read on!
Spring Electronic Waste Recycling Events 

Spring (cleaning) is here and the Lower East Side Ecology Center is helping you clear old and unwanted electronics out of your closets without trashing the environment! Drop-off your tech gear at locations in all five boroughs during March, April and May to have it responsibly recycled.   

A list of acceptable materials can be found here and we accept electronics from households, not-for-profit organizations, and small businesses (less than 50 employees). We do not accept home appliances such as microwaves, refrigerators, air conditioners, vacuum cleaners, kitchen appliances, etc.  We also do not accept carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. 

We know that data security is important to, well, everyone and you can find out more about which recyclers we work with and how we handle data-containing devices in our FAQs.

All events will be held 10 am to 4pm, Rain or Shine.

New York City Compost Project Update   

Welcome to Spring Compost Workshop

Learn how to convert your yard waste and kitchen scraps into a rich, organic fertilizer to feed back to your plants, just like nature intended. In this hands-on workshop the basics of outdoor composting will be discussed along with issues specific to composting in NYC.  Registration required. Workshop fee $5/person.

Compost Harvest, Sift, and Application Workshop

Join the NYC Compost Project in Manhattan in this hands-on workshop on how to harvest, sift and use finished compost. You'll learn how to determine when compost is ready, different ways of harvesting, how to build your own sifter, and various methods of applying compost. A street tree care portion has been added to illustrate how compost can help to nuture NYC street trees. Prior experience with composting is helpful, but not required. $5 attendance fee and registration required.

These events are made possible by the New York city Compost Project, a program funded and managed by the Department of Sanitation Bureau of Waste Prevention, Reuse and Recycling.

East River Park Gardening Day

Meet at the East River Park Fireboat House and join the Ecology Center in kicking off the gardening season in East River Park. Please come prepared to cultivate planting beds, apply compost to trees and shrubs, admire the many bulbs we planted last fall and to get your hands dirty. No need to bring tools or gloves, feel free to bring a brown paper lunch. Everyone is welcome! Please register for this event. 

Employment and Internship Opportunities    

The Ecology Center is hiring a new program associate to work in the Gowanus E-waste Warehouse. If you are smart, self-motivated, and excited about working to divert electronic equipment from ending up in our waste stream, we want to hear from you. Read the full job listing here. 

We are also looking for a few intrepid interns to work in the Gowanus E-waste Warehouse. If you have, or are looking to gain, the skills to refurbish computers and other types of electronic equipment, apply to become an intern in the warehouse. 

Or if you love marketing, communications, and are a social media guru, we are offering the perfect internship for you as well.
