[Fredslist] small inexpensive restaurant in the East Village

Listen up fellow Gothamites
Have I got a good inexpensive Cuban restaurant for you. I saw a short piece about it in the NY Times Dining section 1 1/2 weeks ago: Carteles @ 443 East 6th Street - two doors west of Avenue A. There are no tables but two tiled counters in the small, clean & charming place. We walked there from the NY Theater Workshop during yesterday's rainstorm, and it was worth it. Try the Sancocho soup - chicken soup with lots of chicken & diced potatoes - it comes with a side dish of thinly sliced red onion and avocado and a mound of rice, that you add to the soup as you wish - all for $ 5.00. We also had the Cubano Christo ($ 8.50) - sliced ham, pork, swiss, provolone & sliced pickle - dipped in egg and fried - great. My wife could only finish half the soup and 1/2 the sandwich, so we took the rest home. All this plus two cups of cafe co leche for $ 37.52 - out of the way but worth the walk.
